Comments about the race
The results above show a great disparity between looks and performance, with a few notable exceptions. Of the 24 entries, about one half performed well, while the others had all kinds of problems, from mechanical (lead wires, guide flags, parts falling off) to major engineering flaws (wheels rubbing in body, guides not clearing body, cars running the wrong way)Dennis Hill, Jim Cunningham and yours truly did our best to fix (and fix, and fix...) the cars as they broke down. But some were beyond help and were declared DNFs.Of all the cars entered, Larry Geddes' Shadow was the fastest and the best handling. It was also the fastest qualifiers. It won the race rather easily, outdistancing Jim Cunningham's Lola by 5 laps Larry Shepard's McLaren M20 by one more.Larry's 917 was right behind, fighting it out with the surprisingly effective ultra-narrow Lotus devised by Prof Fate, Rocky Russo. On aggregate points, it brought Rocky's car into second in the race, showing that the handicap point system devised by yours truly actually worked pretty well.
The beautiful TI22 built by Russell Sheldon skidded its way to a 7th place finish, 18 laps behind the Shadow.
Bob Blaschke's McLaren was next best, and performed rather well but was a bit over-powered. While nice and predictable, its handling could not compare with the top dogs machines.
The ample Scuderia Valdetaro provided no less than five cars in the field, and they finished honorably as a group, as poor Luiz never had much of a chance to perform any pre-race duties on his and his brother's entries.
Mark Gussin's beautiful Cro-Sal Spl had developed a major gear problem on the very first lap of its pre-race testing as a crown retaining bearing pushed itself out of its location where it was held only by adhesive. Your Race Direktorr had to take the thing apart to properly solder the culprit in place, after which the gear gave no more problems except being quite noisy. Those things dont like to be out of mesh for one second.
Dan Crowley's pretty Lotus was hopelessly slow, but still soldiered on to finish ahead of the troublesome SOVREN32 group. Arriving the very morning of the race, the package from Seattle had to be fetched 50 miles away and barely made Concours. But even with one more month to finish the cars, all the cars developed major problems that ended in poor finish. Only Doug Ashford's Lang-Cooper managed to stay somewhat together to save the wounded honor of the group. They did, however, have the nicest banner.
Altogether, it was a fast and furious race, and the best cars won. When the dust cleared, Jim Cunningham's Lola T220 had gathered enough points in all the categories to barely edge Russell Sheldon's TI22, whose mediocre race finish was more than compensated by its Concours success. It shows that the formula works.

The back of the pack...
While these cars were not as successful as the front runners, they certainly were a good effort.
From the top:
McKenzie's Lola MK6 and Scarab. Their Sakatsu chassis just did not handle, and the Lola had major problems.
Chuck Lawrence's cute Elva MKVII kept loosing its body and was put to rest before it was demolished.
Jim McLaughlin's Ferrari 712 needed fine tuning.
Scott Smith's Lola needed 30 more days...
Part of the impressive and efficient Scuderia Valdetaro seen from their south pole.
